The Tin Man’s Heart is quite whimsical and the artist invites the viewer to become a child again even if for a brief time.

The Tin Man’s Heart debuted in 1965 for Richard Bernstein’s first solo exhibition in New York City. This work is the quintessential representation of pop art marrying classic iconography of a Hollywood character and the American flag. The theme of Americana was interwoven into this homage to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz as Bernstein himself, perhaps a nod to fellow pop artist Jasper Johns, sewed the American flag.
