This trailblazing series came three decades before contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst and Jonathan Adler made pill paintings mainstream.

This colorful painting titled French Blue is from a series of Pilules (pills) paintings created by Richard Bernstein in 1966 and made its debut at the famed Iris Clert Gallery in Paris. Paloma Picasso was Bernstein’s assistant at the time while he lived in Paris and the pair worked together to create the series. French Blue was the street name for amphetamines which was all the rage throughout 1960s Europe.
